Hong Kong Street Food

Kudos to the Hong Kong Tourism Board for publishing a really helpful pocket-sized guide book on local food and delicacies! Note: It's available from the Visitors Info Counter at the Airport. It took PS and me on a food hunt all over Hong Kong Island and Kowloon! The guide book covers congee, rice rolls, cart noodles (车仔面), beef noodles, dim sum... just to name a few.

Here's a couple of eateries from our tried-and-tested list (that we had managed to take photos for before we gobbled up the food)!

Meatballs
Lok Yuen 乐园牛丸大王
Add: 11 Fa Yuen Street, Mong Kok, Kowloon

Yes... if you are wondering. PS and I ordered 3 bowls to share between us! We had Beef Balls with Fish Maw, Pork Balls with Abalone, and Beef Tendon Balls (which were a little too hard for our liking).

Pork Balls with Abalone. Ha, see that little bit of abalone? Extra care has to be taken when eating as the piping hot broth would ooze out when you bite into the center. The broth is cooked with fish maw so it tastes really sweet and yummy!

Beef Brisket
Kau Kee 九记牛腩
Add: 21 Gough Street, Central, Hong Kong

Given how 'dodgy' these items may seem (for non-asians), I was surprised to see quite a few westerners at the stall. I guess having the location at CBD area does help...

This is one of their signature items: Curry Beef Brisket with Tendon. The gravy is little too salty for me, but I love the melt-in-your-mouth texture of the tendons! The brisket is cooked till really soft too.

Another signature item. They termed this "Crunchy Beef Brisket" which is a special cut of the brisket and comes in limited supply. Yes, the white slices of who-knows-what-they-are do taste crunchy (resembling soft cartilage). This brisket is even softer compared to the normal cut! Excellent broth... :)

I think this post warrants the removal of any references to "PS' small appetite" in previous entry(ies) :)
