I've officially become a macaron snob! Big thanks to ST for taking PS and me to the shop. Pierre Herme simply makes the best macarons I've ever tasted!!! Laduree follows closely behind though... I tried Canele in Singapore (rated No. 1) but it still loses out by a significant margin.

In my short 8 days trip in Paris, I had queued at Pierre Herme on 3 occasions! There was a long line despite the freezing cold. Thankfully, the staff would come out with a tray of mini chocolates every now and then for the customers who were queuing outside the shop. It made my hour-long wait slightly more pleasant and bearable. Good customer service!

Other than the macarons, I really like their cakes too! Almost wanted to get one of each kind at the shop because they all looked sooo pretty. Luckily (for my wallet and waistline), I stopped at 4 pieces... which was quite a lot for 2 persons to share... and not to mention PS' small appetite...

The Taste Test: Laduree vs Pierre Herme - Rose Macaron

I liked the one from Pierre Herme better because Laduree's was slightly sweeter (and I prefer not-so-sweet ones). Also, Pierre Herme's had a slightly creamier filling, an overall lighter texture and a more balanced rose flavour (nicely subtle and not over-powering) which blended in with the cream perfectly.

In terms of flavour selection, Laduree is in the "classics" stream (take chocolate, vanilla, lime and pistachio for examples). Well, it does have a long history! Quoting from Wikipedia: "The double-decker macaron filled with cream that is popular today was invented by the French pâtisserie Ladurée."

Pierre Herme, on the other hand, has ventured into using exotic ingredients like foie gras, white truffles, wasabi and matcha, which are paired up harmoniously with other basic flavours. Mmmm... I'm all for creativity and surprises! :)
